Hello! My name is Kira.
As Lois Lowry said in her book about me, Gathering Blue, on pg.16, " I kept my shoulders straight and spoke."As you can tell from this, my personality is strong, but not always.
On pg.27 I said, " My face felt warm with embarrassment.
On pg.29, I said, "I stood helplessly, my future at stake. I felt the hostility beside me."I might be strong sometimes, like when I remember what my mother taught me before she passed away, but in reality I am a very shy and an awkward person. So, more about me. As I said before, my mother had passed away just recently, but I haven't told you guys anything about my father, have I? Well, to give you some information on that topic, I'm going to give you a quote.
On pg.27 Vandara said, "Her father was killed by beasts even before her birth, and now her mother is dead."So, yes.. my father is dead. But, I'm proud that he died the way he did, because I know he was a strong fighter and a very skilled hunter & I am glad to say he was a brave person, no matter the situation. So, yes, both of my parents died and it saddens me that their deaths didn't faze anyone. Because to me, they both were the center of my earth. My heart still aches for them, but life carries on, even through the toughest moments. Anyway, I'm getting a little off track here, so let me talk about my appearence a little bit. Above, is a picture of me. As you can see, I have a paleish-pinky glow to my skin and I have hair that reaches about to my mid-forearm and is so dark it blends in with the night. If you haven't read the ook, you wouldn't know that I have a deformed leg. Well, I do. In my community, being deformed isn't prized and I am treated differently than others are. But, sometimes I say to myself that being deformed isn't so bad. I may be a little different, but I give myself hope that one day people will treat us the same as them.
So, if you don't know, that is me above picking some flowers in the picture above. Part of my job is to pick flowers to make dyes and colors for my threads. Without the colors and dyes, the robe I was assigned to work on as my job, would be dull and colorless. To you, picking some flowers is a hobby fr old, boring people. But, to me picking flowers calms me and makes me feel like I could do something important. Picking flowers is a small thing to do, for such a magnificent artpiece in the end.
Anyway, after my mother died, I was sent to live and work in one of the wings in the Edifice. Atfirst, I felt out of place, foreign and lonely. But, I after I met Thomas, the carver who also lives there, he helped me find my place and I couldn't ask for anything more. My 2nd and my closest friend is Matt. Matt is a tyke and gets beaten by his mother, which stings my eyes with tears. Though, Matt is an amazing friend and is always by my side. He even went on a long and very tough journey just to get me some blue. You know what the sweetest thing he did for me was? He actually found my father and brought him to me! You're probably confused and asking yourself, "Didn't your father die and get eaten by beasts?" Well, I thought so too, but he is actually alive and very well, he just is blind. That sight makes me sad, but to know that he is alive boosts my feelings very much.
The whole point of Lois Lowry's book about me was to show people that even if some people are different, they go a long way in life & are the same as everyone else in the world, maybe even better. Lois called this book Gathering Blue, because even though you might think it's not a big part of the story, it really is. The whole book I was trying to figure out how to make blue and blue was the thing that brought me and my father together again. You see, where I live, blue is very rare and it is such a beautiful thing to make and use. If you don't know what I am talking about, here is a picture of some blue:
See the blue thread above? To you it might not mean or be anything, but to me it made my world complete again. It made my father and I have closure, it made Matt have a better life, which makes me very happy also, and it helped me complete my job. So, thank you blue for changing lives! Now, I'm going to end with this quote found on pg.215,
"The blue was gathered in my hand, and I could feel it quiver, as if it had been given breath and was beginning to live... just like I was."
